Coleus Forskohlii, a plant that is in the mint family, has a natural root extract known as forskolin that has grown in popularity over the past few years and is considered a powerful cAMP activator supplement which gives it a diverse portfolio of benefits and claims.
While many people know about forskolins’ amazing ability to aid in weight-loss, many aren’t aware that it has multiple health benefits. As more research has been done, it’s been proven that forskolin is extremely versatile in what conditions it’s able to treat.
A study done by the Journal of Clinical Investigation found that forskolin can help deter certain conditions of the heart due to its cyclic adenosine monophosphate stimulation.
The Journal of International Medical Research released another study that looked at how coleus forskohlii extract (forskolin) is better than other traditional treatments for asthma.
A Japanese study found that forskolin can help fight colon cancer.
And the list goes on and on. Studies and medical research has continued to find different ways that forskolin is beneficial to the body. From fighting glaucoma to skin protection to minimizing urinary tract infections, it almost seems like there is nothing forskolin can’t support or provide a boost in.
The Popularity of Forskolin Extract
Not every new miracle supplement can be trusted, which is why the growing popularity of forskolin is so exciting. Many users of forskolin claim that they came to use the supplement due to the recommendation of Dr. Oz.
However, the doctor is infamous for the number of false claims he’s made on his show, so his recommendation doesn’t offer a lot of encouragement for the more skeptical users. Dr. Oz isn’t the only person in support of forskolin, though.
Most health trends come with very little scientific evidence to support their claims. Forskolin has an extensive history that involves research and studies, most done by experts and professionals. Many of these findings have been printed in scientific journals, which only serves to bolster the forskolin reputation.
Forskolin: A Brief Introduction
The use of forskolin as a healing plant dates back to the birth of Ayurveda medicine. This system is an ancient Indian method that focuses on all-natural alternatives. History shows that forskolin was used to treat a number of ailments, including:
- Digestive Disorders
- Insect Bites
- Neck Stiffness
- Poor Circulation
While this piece of history is very interesting, most skeptics need more concrete, and modern, evidence before considering forskolin. And the best way to look at forskolin scientifically is to start with the plant itself.
A Scientific Look at Forskolin
Scientifically called Coleus Forskohlii, the forskolin plant has many varieties. The one used in most supplements today is the Indian Coleus.
Researchers state that forskolin works on a biological level, working with the body from the cells up. The majority believe that the plants ability is due to its ability to increase the cyclic adenosine monophosphate, or cAMP, levels in the body. Cyclic AMP works to transfer hormones into the cells in the body. Due to the plants ability to be broken down so thoroughly, scientists believe that its healing properties are just now being fully discovered.
The study that got everyone talking about forskolin again was the Godard study, which had the objective of examining how the body reacted to forskolin. The study looked specifically at the body composition, blood pressure, metabolic rate, and testosterone levels in subjects.
All thirty of the subjects involved in the Godard study were overweight or obese.
In the Godard Study, some of the subjects were given forskolin for 12 weeks. After this time, they had better bone mass and more lean body mass than the subjects who had not been given forskolin. The study also found that the men who took the plant supplement had higher testosterone levels.
While this study was done on subjects who were overweight or obese, many hope that the same results will be had for those who aren’t overweight, but are still trying to lose weight. Hopefully, future research on this topic will yield broader results.
Forskolin and Urinary Tract Infections
While the Godard Study is one of the biggest and most influential studies done on forskolin and weight loss, there’s an even more promising study done on how forskolin can cure UTI’s.
The problem with UTI’s is that the bacteria found in the urinary tract is very adaptable. The bacteria that infects the bladder to cause UTI’s releases when the bladder is full, but retract when the bladder is emptied.
If the bacteria is retracted when the antibiotics are ingested, then there’s a chance that the UTI won’t be completely cured. This results in recurring UTI’s.
The study, released by Nature Medicine in 2007, looked at how forskolin can kill the bacteria in urinary tracts that even antibiotics can’t treat.
The cAMP found in forskolin keeps the bacteria in the bladder from retracting, meaning the infection is completely cleared out when the antibiotics were taken.
At the moment, the study has only gone through animal trials, but many in the medical industry can’t wait to start human trials.
Forskolin & Hearing Loss
The School of Medicine at the University of Virginia performed studies to see how forskolin could aid in helping mammals recover from ear damage that might cause hearing loss. The study looked at how forskolin could regenerate hair cells that would help improve hearing. We are use to the forskolin weight loss study, but not many have touched upon these other positive effects.
The animal study found that, although long-term exposure to forskolin didn’t improve hair regrowth, brief contact did. When exposed to forskolin for an hour, the rats in the study had an increase in their cAMP levels, which cause hair to grow. The growth of this hair in the ears lead to the recovery of the rats hearing loss.
Unlike so many of the supplements on the market today, forskolin has an abundance of scientific proof to back up its claims of being a powerful supplement. It’s been proven over and over again to maximize cAMP in the body. And, because so much of the body’s health depends on cAMP levels, a supplement that can increase this activity is truly amazing.
